Meet the Sanrio Characters: Hello Kitty, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll, and Friends Explained

If you have ever wandered through our booth at a market and wondered who the mischievous little rabbit in the jester hat is, or why a fluffy white puppy has ears that let him fly โ€” welcome! You have discovered the wonderful world of Sanrio. ๐ŸŽ€โœจ

Sanrio is the Japanese company behind some of the most beloved characters on the planet, and their universe goes far beyond Hello Kitty. Here is your guide to the characters you will spot across our blind boxes, plush, and accessories.

Hello Kitty ๐ŸŽ€

The icon who started it all. Hello Kitty debuted in 1974 and remains one of the most recognizable characters in the world. Fun fact that surprises many new fans: according to Sanrio, she is not a cat โ€” she is a cheerful little girl named Kitty White who lives in London with her twin sister Mimmy. Her signature red bow is one of the most famous accessories in kawaii history.

My Melody ๐Ÿฐ

A sweet and honest little rabbit who debuted in 1975, always wearing her pink or red hood. My Melody loves baking with her mother and is famous for her gentle, caring personality. She is the classic "soft girl" of the Sanrio universe โ€” and the longtime rival-slash-friend of our next character.

Kuromi ๐Ÿ’œ

My Melody's punky counterpart and arguably the breakout star of the last few years. Kuromi wears a black jester hood with a pink skull and considers herself My Melody's rival, but underneath the tough act she is secretly girly and loves writing in her diary. If you love a character with a little attitude, Kuromi is your girl. Kuromi items are consistently among the first to sell out at our events!

Cinnamoroll โ˜๏ธ

Not a bunny โ€” a fluffy white puppy! Cinnamoroll debuted in 2001 and was born on a cloud, with long ears that let him fly. He is shy but friendly, with a tail curled like a cinnamon roll (hence the name). Cinnamoroll has repeatedly ranked at the very top of Sanrio's annual character popularity polls, and his dreamy blue-and-white color palette makes him a favorite for desk setups and plush collections.

Pompompurin ๐Ÿฎ

A laid-back golden retriever in a brown beret who loves pudding and naps. Pompompurin is pure comfort-character energy โ€” soft, round, and perfectly squishable in plush form.

Pochacco ๐Ÿถ

A sporty, curious white pup with floppy black ears. Pochacco loves basketball and biking, and his simple, clean design has made him a quiet favorite among collectors who love a retro look.

Little Twin Stars โญ

Kiki and Lala, twin star siblings who came down from the heavens. Their pastel pink-and-blue world is pure dreamy aesthetic โ€” perfect if your collection leans soft and celestial.

How Sanrio fits into blind box collecting

Sanrio characters appear across many of the blind box lines we carry, from figure series to plush keychains. The format works just like the blind boxes we covered in our beginner guide: each sealed box contains one mystery character or pose from the series, so you do not know which friend you are getting until you open it. Popular characters like Kuromi and Cinnamoroll tend to be the most hunted pulls, which makes trading duplicates with friends half the fun.

A few collecting tips from our booth:

  • Pick your main character. Sanrio's roster is huge, so most collectors focus on one or two favorites rather than trying to collect everything.
  • Mix formats. A shelf that combines figures, plush, and small accessories for one character looks intentional and adorable.
  • Buy authentic. Just like with Labubu and Sonny Angel, counterfeit Sanrio merchandise is everywhere online. Official licensed products have crisp printing, proper tags, and quality stitching on plush.
